Frankfurt, Germany’s fifth largest city, has come into the 21st century with enormous economic power as both a key transportation hub for Germany and one of continental Europe’s two economic and financial centers (the other being Paris).

Frankfurt serves the European Union as the seat of the European Central Bank, German Federal Bank and Frankfurt Stock Exchange and as a major venue for international trade fairs, exhibitions and congresses. As home to thousands of companies – from the German publishing industry to public relations, marketing, media and telecommunications – Frankfurt has become the financial and industry capital of Germany and the European Union. According to a Liverpool University study, it is the wealthiest city in the European Union, measured by GDP per capita.
