Mohamed El-Erian’s When Markets Collide: Investment Strategies for the Age of Global Economic Change was named the winner of the fourth annual award at a ceremony and gala dinner in New York City on Tuesday, October 14.

When Markets Collide offers a cogent picture of the rapidly changing world financial system. The book explores the new economic landscape and provides a detailed blueprint for both capitalizing on the investment opportunities available in this landscape, and minimizing the challenging new set of risks.

“Mohamed El-Erian provides invaluable context for the global financial crisis and does so in an extremely accessible and compelling way,” stated Lloyd Blankfein, Goldman Sachs chairman and chief executive officer, “When Markets Collide deserves to be this year’s winner.”

When Markets Collide was chosen from the largest number of titles ever submitted in the award’s four-year history.

The winner of last year’s award was William D. Cohan’s The Last Tycoons, and James Kynge’s China Shakes the World won the award in 2006. Thomas L. Friedman’s The World is Flat won the inaugural award in 2005.

This year’s distinguished panel of judges included:

Lloyd C. Blankfein, chairman and chief executive officer, Goldman Sachs

Lionel Barber, editor, Financial Times

Professor Niall Ferguson, academic, author and financial historian

Mario Monti, president of Bocconi University, Milan and former Competition Commissioner of the European Union

Helen Alexander, senior adviser, Bain Capital, non-executive director of Rolls Royce and Centrica and vice president, CBI
